Brainstorming Science Stamps Mark the Royal Society's 350th Anniversary

London, UK (PRWeb UK) 26 Feb 2010 -- A special set of stamps (http://www.royalmail.com/portal/stamps/content1;jsessionid=QHRCRZSE5ZVC2FB2IGFUOSQUHRAYUQ2K?catId=32300674&mediaId=115800816) are being issued today (25 February) by Royal Mail to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Royal Society, the world's oldest continuous science academy. The stamp collection (http://www.royalmail.com/portal/stamps/content1;jsessionid=QHRCRZSE5ZVC2FB2IGFUOSQUHRAYUQ2K?catId=32300674&mediaId=115800816) will feature a radical split-stamp design and are sure to be a fixture in any budding scientist or stamp collectors' stamp collection.

The ten 1st Class stamps feature significant figures from the Royal Society. The stamps show the scientists paired with dramatic and colourful 'brainstorming' imagery representing their achievements.

Royal Mail worked closely with experts from the Royal Society to select ten illustrious individuals. These include Sir Isaac Newton and Edward Jenner and were drawn from more than 1,400 Fellows and Foreign Members and over 60 Nobel Laureates.

Julietta Edgar, Head of Special Stamps at Royal Mail said: "For three and a half centuries the Royal Society has maintained its position at the forefront of enquiry and discovery, and at the cutting edge of scientific progress.

Now its hugely valuable role will be celebrated through stamps on millions of 1st Class letters across the UK and by collectors worldwide."

Martin Rees, President of the Royal Society, said: "These stamps commemorate some of the best known Fellows of the Royal Society and their extraordinary achievements. As we celebrate our 350th year we hope that they will generate a sense of excitement and pride in our scientific history, and strengthen our resolve to ensure that science yields new discoveries and benefits in the 21st century."
